Our take

The MSI PRO B760M-A WiFi DDR4 II is the board to buy if you want to build a cheap Intel PC and reuse DDR4 memory from an older system. It pairs perfectly with the Core i5-14400F.

Why DDR4?

New AMD AM5 and Intel Core Ultra platforms use DDR5 memory only. If you already own 16GB or 32GB of DDR4, a DDR4 board on Intel's LGA 1700 platform lets you keep it, which can save a lot of money while memory prices are high. DDR4 is a little slower than DDR5, but with a mid-range graphics card the difference in games is small.

Power and performance

The 12+1 phase power design comfortably handles Core i5 and Core i7 processors from Intel's 12th, 13th and 14th generations. The B760 chipset doesn't allow processor overclocking, but memory runs at its rated XMP speed.

Install the latest BIOS, which includes Intel's microcode fixes for 13th and 14th-generation processors.

Storage and connectivity

There are two M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs, plus SATA ports for older drives. There's no PCIe 5.0 storage. Networking includes 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E. MSI also sells a version without Wi-Fi under almost the same name, PRO B760M-A DDR4 II, so check the listing says WiFi.

Platform

LGA 1700 is a finished platform: Intel won't release new processors for it, so your next processor upgrade will mean a new motherboard.

Who should buy it

Buy the PRO B760M-A WiFi DDR4 II for the cheapest capable Intel gaming PC, especially if you're reusing DDR4 memory. If you're buying new memory anyway, an AM5 board like the ASRock B850M Pro RS WiFi gives you an upgrade path.
