Our take

The Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite WiFi7 is our pick for the best-value AM5 motherboard. It covers everything most builders need, PCIe 5.0 for the graphics card and storage, strong power delivery and Wi-Fi 7, at a very fair price.

Power and performance

The Aorus Elite uses Gigabyte's digital twin VRM design with large, finned heatsinks. It handles every Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processor comfortably, including 16-core chips, and supports memory overclocking up to around DDR5-8200. At stock settings it performs the same as far more expensive boards.

Storage and expansion

There are three M.2 slots, one PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0, which is enough for a fast boot drive and two game drives. The main graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16. Some M.2 slots share bandwidth with expansion slots or SATA ports, so check the manual's lane-sharing table before filling every slot.

Gigabyte's EZ-Latch features let you install M.2 drives without screws and release the graphics card with a simple button, which makes building and upgrading much easier.

Connectivity

You get 2.5Gb Ethernet, plenty for home broadband, plus Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 with a directional antenna. There's a good selection of USB ports on the rear panel, including fast USB-C. There's no USB4.

The board comes in black, or white as the ICE version for themed builds.

Platform

AMD has committed to supporting the AM5 socket until at least 2027, so the board can take a faster Ryzen processor later. Boards made before Ryzen 9000 launched may need a BIOS update first; this one supports BIOS Flashback, which updates the BIOS from a USB stick without a processor installed.

Who should buy it

Buy the B850 Aorus Elite WiFi7 for a mid-range AM5 gaming PC where value matters. If you want four M.2 slots and 5Gb Ethernet, the MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi II costs a little more.
