Our take

The ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi is a premium AM5 motherboard for high-end builds. It combines huge power delivery, five M.2 slots, two USB4 ports and one of the best BIOS interfaces available.

Power and performance

The Strix X870E-E uses an 18+2+2 phase design with 110A power stages, which handles a 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D with heavy overclocking and sustained all-core loads with ease. Large heatsinks keep the power stages cool. Memory support goes up to around DDR5-8400 with overclocking.

ASUS's AI overclocking and memory tuning tools make it easier to get extra performance, and its BIOS is clear and well organised.

Storage and expansion

Five M.2 slots, three of them PCIe 5.0, give room for a huge amount of fast storage, ideal for video editors and anyone with a large game library. The main graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16, and ASUS's tool-free Q-Release and M.2 Q-Latch features make building easier. Some M.2 slots share bandwidth with expansion slots or SATA ports, so check the manual's lane-sharing table before filling every slot.

Connectivity

X870E guarantees USB4, and the Strix has two 40Gbps USB4 ports alongside plenty of other USB ports. Networking includes 5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.

Platform

AMD has committed to supporting the AM5 socket until at least 2027, so the board can take a faster Ryzen processor later. Boards made before Ryzen 9000 launched may need a BIOS update first; this one supports BIOS Flashback, which updates the BIOS from a USB stick without a processor installed.

Who should buy it

Buy the ROG Strix X870E-E for a high-end Ryzen 9 build where you'll use the extra storage, USB4 and tuning headroom, or for a showpiece PC. For most gaming PCs, the MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi II performs the same in games for far less.
