AMD is bringing back the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for AM4 owners
The 2022 gaming favourite is being re-released, giving owners of older AM4 systems a drop-in upgrade at a time when new memory is expensive.
AMD is re-releasing the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the processor that first brought its 3D V-Cache technology to desktop PCs in 2022. According to AMD, the idea came from chief executive Lisa Su herself.
The 5800X3D has 8 cores and 16 threads, plus a large 96MB pool of L3 cache stacked on top of the processor. That extra cache makes a big difference in games, and on release it was one of the fastest gaming chips available, despite running on the older AM4 platform.
Why it matters now
The timing makes sense. With memory prices still sky-high, moving to a new platform with DDR5 has become much more expensive. The 5800X3D works in existing AM4 motherboards with the DDR4 memory you already own, so for many people it's the cheapest way to get a big boost in gaming performance.
Will it work in my PC?
Most AM4 motherboards with a 400- or 500-series chipset (such as B450, X470, B550 and X570) support the 5800X3D after a BIOS update. Check your motherboard maker's support page for compatibility and update the BIOS before you swap processors. The chip doesn't come with a cooler, so you'll need a decent air or liquid cooler too.
We'll add the 5800X3D to our processor buying guide once it's widely available in the UK. If you're building a brand-new PC, the AM5 platform remains the better long-term buy, and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is still our top gaming pick.
