Our take
The Razer DeathAdder Essential keeps Razer's famously comfortable right-handed shape at a very low price. It's an easy upgrade from a basic office mouse and a good first gaming mouse.
Shape and comfort
The DeathAdder shape has been around for well over a decade and remains one of the most comfortable mouse designs. Its sculpted, right-handed body supports your palm and fingers, and suits medium to large hands with a palm or claw grip. Left-handed players need a different mouse.
Performance
The optical sensor tracks up to 6,400 DPI. It's basic compared with premium sensors, but accurate and consistent for most games at normal sensitivities. Razer's mechanical switches are rated for 10 million clicks.
At 96g it's heavier than modern lightweight mice, which gives it a steady feel. Competitive players may prefer something lighter.
Buttons and setup
There are five programmable buttons: left, right, scroll-wheel click and two side buttons. It works straight away without installing any software, and Razer Synapse lets you remap buttons and change sensitivity if you want to. The lighting is a single green logo.
Who should buy it
Buy the DeathAdder Essential for a cheap, comfortable mouse for gaming and everyday use. If you want the same shape with wireless, a much lighter body and a better sensor, the DeathAdder V3 Pro is the premium version.
